Media Miscellaneous US embassy to host journalism training workshops, lectures |
| |
Veteran US journalist and author Arnold R Isaacs will offer a series of training workshops and lectures for Pakistani journalists on election coverage, the US Embassy announced on Sunday. The lectures will be held at venues throughout Pakistan from October 28 through November 9. Mr Isaacs will visit Islamabad, Peshawar, Karachi, and several other cities in the Punjab. He will conduct training workshops with professional journalists on issues related to election coverage. He will also speak to university students of journalism, mass communications, and international relations on the role of the media in a democracy and in the election process. “The role of a free press in a democratic society is always essential, but never more so than in reporting on elections. Journalists play a key role in informing the people of the choices available to them and encouraging them to participate in the elections,” said Kay Webb Mayfield, US Embassy Counselor for Public Affairs. Mr Isaacs served as a foreign and Washington correspondent and as an editor for the Baltimore Sun for more than 18 years, reporting from more than 40 countries. His work has also appeared in publications such as The Washington Post, The New York Times and Chicago Tribune. As an educator, Mr Isaacs has held teaching positions in the political science and communications departments of Towson University and Johns Hopkins University in the US, as well as institutions in Ukraine and China. He has conducted journalism-training courses for professional journalists and students in more than a dozen countries in the former Soviet Union, the Balkans and Southeast Asia. |

Fire damages studios at Radio Pakistan building
Fire destroys 14 studios of Radio Pak Karachi
A massive fire erupted on Sunday at the Radio Pakistan building, a historic monument of the city, disrupting the transmission from the Karachi station for some time. Luckily, there was no casualty. The century-old building located on the main MA Jinnah Road caught fire at 10:45 a.m. At that time, a number of children, along with comperes and relevant staff, were present for the recording of a weekly children’s programme. They were safely evacuated. Fire engulfed the ground and the first floor of the building and spread rapidly due to its wooden interior. The control room, switch room and some fourteen studios were damaged. However, expensive installations and the old record of the station remained safe, sources said.

Music Music shop owner torches 10,000 CDs |
| |
A music shop owner ‘voluntarily’ set on fire more than 10,000 CDs in the presence of a large number of people here on Sunday after receiving death threats from the local Taliban. Syed Raza said he had received several letters in which he had been warned that his shop would be blown up if he did not stop his un-Islamic activities. He said that someone had sent him some money along with a letter, telling him to make his own funeral arrangements. “I told my family and friends about the letters and they advised me to abandon the business. I decided to burn the CDs because I thought that my life was more important to me than the loss of a few hundred thousand rupees.” Mr Raza invited a local cleric to torch the CDs in the presence of a large number of people near the old bus stand in the Kohat city. The president of the music shop owners association has already given an undertaking to the police on behalf of 100 businessmen to voluntarily wind up their businesses in a month. |

PU Musicology Dept 2km away from Old Campus |
| |
Punjab University (PU) administration failed to set up a separate block for its Musicology Department after a lapse of one year despite availability of approved budget for the project. Since introduction of MA Musicology programme in 2006, the classes are being held at Alhamra, The Mall, around two kilometer away from varsity’s Old Campus. The programme was started at Alhamra, reportedly, to avoid any confrontation with the IJT activists who opposed the said programme saying it is against Islam and ideology of Pakistan. The PU administration has claimed that musicology classes will be held temporarily at Alhamra while special arrangements will be made at varsity’s Old Campus to accommodate the students of the said programme. The administration has also claimed to launch other programmes in the field of performing arts at masters and degree levels besides short course but, so far, no other programme has been introduced. In 2006, PU Syndicate had approved a budget of Rs 40 million for establishment of a separate block for musicology department while later an amount of Rs 20 million was also allocated for the said project. |
