The Punjab Assembly on Friday unanimously adopted a resolution for the protection of journalists and the immediate implementation of the 7th Wage Board Award. Treasury member Misbah Kokab presented the resolution. Opposition members Arshad Mahmood Baggu and Sheikh Ejaz objected that the government had failed to protect journalists and was itself presenting this resolution. Kokab said the house strongly recommended to the federal government for the immediate implementation of the 7th Wage Board Award and to initiate work for the formation of the 8th Wage Board Award. The resolution added that legislation like the Newspaper Employees Act of 1973 should be made for the employees of electronic media. The house also passed a resolution moved by MMA’s Baggu regarding distribution of agriculture land to landless people of Balochistan. Another resolution presented by opposition member Tahira Munir Malik to immediately declare Urdu as the official language of the country was also passed unanimously. The mover in support of her motion quoted Quaid-e-Azam as having said, “The official language of Pakistan should be Urdu since without a common official language no nation could remain united or move forward on the path of development”. She said the house should pass the resolution in light of this the saying.

President’s address to media workshop in NDU |
| |
President Pervaiz Musharraf addressed to concluding session of first National Media Workshop organized by the National Defence University here on Friday. He said he is the biggest supporter of media’s freedom, but questioned whether the Judiciary had won more independence during the current crisis or ompromised its independence at the hands of the lawyers. He reiterated his commitment to a free, robust and vibrant media, and termed it as the fourth pillar of the State and first line of defence to safeguard and promote national interest. The President described media as an essential ingredient of democracy and added that he was very proud to have opened it up, particularly the private television channels and FM radio stations, despite some opposition not to do so. He said, “With freedom comes responsibility, especially when it is a question of national interest.” While talking about distinction between national interests, public interests and government interests, the President exhorted the media to act as the watchdog. “It is the responsibility of the media to speak out about shortcomings of the government and give it an advice to perform better,” he added. He also urged the media to be just, fair and impartial in reporting about the issues without vested interests. “National and public interests should never be compromised,” he added. Musharraf acknowledged the positive role played by the media after the earthquake of October 8, 2005, during national debate on Women Protection Bill and on the issue of Jamia Hafsa. The President remarked that the country is facing a host of important problems and he will talk about them in his address to the nation next week.

Radio FM Listening | It’s all mind game by Sehrish Wasif |
| |
“It might be because the rational concept of FM channels in our minds is that of music machinery, a tree which can sprinkle little but 24-hour non-stop endless music. It is distressing to see that no one is ready to become different, to introduce new trends, and to see the positive impact these changes can have in our society. Maybe because they think of music as the sustenance of the soul, but may be they have forgotten that information and knowledge are the sustenance of the mind. No doubt it is all mind game!”

Movies View: The ‘other’ mighty hearts -Rafia Zakaria |
| |
“Since Pearl’s death seven Pakistani journalists have been killed for their reporting. Of these three, Amir Nowab, Hayatullah Khan and Fazal Wahab, are all said to have been targeted by Islamist groups. Yet, it is unlikely that any movies will be made about their deaths or any sympathy reserved for their wives and families. In their anonymity, they will be forgotten by both Pakistanis and Americans duped into believing the lie that Islamist terror fights along civilisational lines.”
