A daily review of media coverage of media and communications issues
Editorial
Free expression
THAT Pakistan has fallen seven places in the press freedom index since last year with the Reporters Without Borders placing it at the 157th position in its latest report released on Thursday, is a reflection on the present government, even though it keeps claiming that the media has been given unprecedented freedom in the last seven years. The fact remains that Pakistan 's record on freedom of expression is deteriorating since 2002 when it was placed at 119th from where it sank to 150th over the next three years. In the meantime India improved its record by going up from 128th position in 2002 to 105th now, in the index that covers 168 states. As the Report appreciated the governments of some less-developed countries for taking measures to ensure as much freedom to journalists as enjoyed by their counterparts in the developed world, it noted with concern the steady erosion of press freedom in the USA , France and Japan .
