Pakistani journalists receive Internews excellence awards for reporting the earthquake and its aftermath amid difficult conditions


ISLAMABAD , May 12, 2006: The four Pakistani journalists who won Internews Humanitarian Reporting Awards 2006 for excellence in media coverage of the October 8, 2005 earthquake received their prizes in a ceremony organized in their honour in Abbottabad on Thursday, May 11.

The recipients of the awards included Abrar Rashid of Geo TV for Best TV News Report, Waseem Khan of Online for Best Photograph Published and Shazia Irum of Campus FM 107 radio, Peshawar University for Best Radio News Report. Abrar Rashid also collected the prize on behalf of Fasih ur Rehman of The News for Best English Newspaper Report as he could not attend the ceremony owing to some other engagement.

The award has been constituted by the staff of Internews Pakistan ( www.internews.org.pk ) and was announced on thee World Press Freedom Day to acknowledge the professionalism of Pakistani media. Internews is a non-profit organization working for capacity building of Pakistani media. Matiullah Jan of Internews Pakistan conducted the proceedings and Najib Ahmed of Power 99 distributed the awards.
